Welcome to Sogang Economics

The Department of Economics at Sogang University (Sogang Economics) has long been a leader in economics education and research in Korea. Grounded in the academic excellence and dedication of our faculty, we have made significant contributions not only to the advancement of economic scholarship, but also to society—by addressing key structural issues and offering policy insights on pressing economic challenges.

Since our founding alongside Sogang University in 1960, we have grown steadily in both size and stature. Our undergraduate program produced its first graduating class in 1964, and our graduate programs were established shortly thereafter, with the Graduate School of Economics (formerly the Graduate School of Economic Policy) launching in 1991 to train future economists and policy experts. Today, we serve a dynamic community of around 1,000 students across undergraduate and graduate levels.

From the beginning, Sogang Economics distinguished itself by adopting a forward-looking, American-style liberal arts curriculum and by recruiting internationally trained scholars, many among Korea’s first generation of globally educated economists. This pioneering spirit continues to define our department. Our faculty, often referred to collectively as the “Sogang School,” have played instrumental roles in shaping Korea’s economic development through rigorous research and the cultivation of talent equipped to navigate and influence a rapidly evolving global economy.

As Korea confronts new economic realities—from industrial transformation and digital innovation to demographic shifts and inequality—the role of economists is more crucial than ever. The era of high-growth manufacturing-led expansion has given way to the need for innovative, inclusive, and sustainable growth models. Our mission is to prepare students to understand complex market dynamics and to become thought leaders who drive change across public policy, finance, industry, and academia.
